Rhinoplasty: Procedure, Costs, and Risks

By Annisa Amalia Ikhsania | March 27, 2024

Rhinoplasty, commonly known as a “nose job," is one of the most common forms of cosmetic surgery. A rhinoplasty reshapes your nose to enhance your look or address health issues that cause breathing difficulties. It can fix a broken nose or a deviated septum.

Get informed and make informed decisions. Delve into the details of this medical procedure and connect with our healthcare professionals to discuss your options.

What is Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty is a type of plastic surgery that enhances the size and shape of your nose. Some people get cosmetic rhinoplasty to improve the appearance of their faces and noses. Some individuals have functional rhinoplasty, which enhances nasal function and breathing. Plastic surgeons and facial plastic surgeons are the surgeons who undertake this treatment.

Why Do You Need Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty can do this under the following conditions:

  • Fix a nose that looks drooping, hooked, bulbous, or upside down.
  • Repair a crooked septum.
  • Correct nostrils that are turned upward, too big, too tiny, or too broad.
  • Eliminate any apparent lumps or dips on the bridge of your nose.
  • To achieve facial balance, enlarge or reduce the size of the nose.
  • Unblock obstructed nasal passageways.

Rhinoplasty is commonly used in order to:

  • Fix a congenital disability or congenital condition.
  • Boost your look all around.
  • Open blocked nasal passageways (septum deviation).
  • Correct a facial fracture, such as a nose break.
  • Restore breathing following illness, cancer treatments, burns, or severe injuries.

What Happens Before Rhinoplasty?

Before starting rhinoplasty, you need to find a reputable clinic or hospital. After that, you will first meet with your surgeon before your rhinoplasty treatment.

You can discuss the desired outcomes and ask questions during this discussion. This includes:

  • A history of medical history, nasal obstructions, and medications you currently take.
  • Your medical professional will measure, examine, and take pictures of your face.
  • You two can talk about the risks, results, and options for surgery.
  • Pictures of your ideal nose appearance following surgery, if you have any.

Rhinoplasty Procedure

Rhinoplasty is an outpatient procedure, meaning you return home the same day. The procedure may be performed at an outpatient clinic or a hospital.

Depending on how complex your surgery is and what the surgeon prefers, you get general anesthesia (which means you’ll be asleep) and local anesthetic (when your nose is numbed).

There are various procedures to change the contour of the cartilage or bones in your nose. Depending on the structure of the nose, the amount that needs to be added or removed, and the available materials. Cartilage from the ear or further into the nose may be used for minor adjustments.

Implants, bone from other body areas, or cartilage from a rib can be used for more extensive modifications. Following these modifications, the tissue and skin around the nose are restored, and the incisions are made.

How Long Does Rhinoplasty Process?

The duration of your rhinoplasty procedure can range from one to three hours. After the surgery, you will be in a recovery room. As you wake up, you will be observed. If you have any other health concerns, you may stay overnight or go later that day.

What Are the Risks of Rhinoplasty?

A rhinoplasty is generally safe. However, like all medications and medical procedures, this procedure has some risks and possible side effects.

Risks and complications may include bleeding, infection, and a harmful anesthetic procedure. Other risk factors specific to rhinoplasty include, but are not exclusive to:

  • Difficulties breathing through the nose.
  • Persistent numbness in the nose's surrounding area.
  • There is a possibility for a nose that is uneven.
  • Pain, possibly permanent discoloration, or swelling.
  • Scarring.
  • A gap in the wall connecting the nostrils on the left and right. This condition is called septal perforation.
  • A requirement for another surgery.
  • change of the smell sense.

What Can You Expect After Rhinoplasty?

Following the procedure, you must lie in bed and rest with your head higher than your chest. This lessens edema and bleeding. Swelling may have caused your nose to bulge excessively, and the splints placed inside it during surgery may also be to blame.

The internal bandages are often left on for one to seven days following surgery. Your nose may be taped with a splint to provide support and safety, but it usually lasts for a week or so.

For a few days following the procedure or after taking off the bandage, you can have some minor bleeding, mucous, and old blood draining. A drip pad, a little piece of gauze secured with tape, can be placed under your nose.

As instructed by your healthcare provider, replace the gauze. The drip pad should not be pressed up to your nose.

The estimated average for rhinoplasty in Indonesia costs from IDR 20.000.000.
