Facelift: Procedure, Costs, and Risks

By Annisa Amalia Ikhsania | April 30, 2024

A facelift, technically referred to as a rhytidectomy, is a cosmetic surgery used to elevate and tighten the skin around the neck and face, thereby smoothing out wrinkles and loose skin. This procedure is for anyone looking to fight aging and revitalize their appearance.

Know the facts so you can make wise choices. Explore the specifics of this cosmetic treatment and get in touch with our medical staff to talk about your alternatives.

What is Facelift (Rhytidectomy)?

A facial lift, or rhytidectomy, is a cosmetic surgery used to rejuvenate the face and or neck. Skin drooping might be minimized with this method. Additionally, it may help in the smoothing of skin creases around the jawline and cheeks.

A skin flap is pulled back on both sides of the face during a facelift. Excess skin is removed, and the tissues beneath the skin are changed. The face looks more youthful as a result.

Who Gets Facelift?

Having a facelift is a personal choice. A common reason for getting a facelift is to make your face look younger. There are various reasons why you might desire to increase the look of your face and neck, such as:

  • cheeks that appear sagging.
  • too much flesh around the lower jaw.
  • skin folds that extend deeply from the corners of the mouth to the nose's sides.
  • excessive neck fat and sagging skin.

Generally, you’re a good candidate for a facelift if:

  • You don't have any health issues that would prevent your body from healing, and you're in good physical health.
  • You abstain from smoking.

Patients with facial aging indicators and some skin elasticity remaining are the best candidates for facelift surgery. Patients in their 40s to 60s are typically included in this, while individuals outside of that age range may occasionally be candidates for surgery.

What Happens Before Facelift?

Before starting a facelift, you need to find a reputable clinic or hospital. After that, you will first meet with your surgeon to consult.

The following subjects will be covered by you and your surgeon during your facelift consultation:

  • Your objectives and desires for the facelift procedure.
  • Any allergies, medical conditions, and/or therapies you are receiving.
  • Your present drug, drink, cigarette, vitamin, and supplement usage.
  • You may have had procedures in the past.

Additionally, during the appointment, your surgeon will do:

  • Assess your physical well-being in general.
  • Assess the state of your mental and emotional well-being.
  • Talk about your possibilities for a facelift.
  • Measure, examine, and take clinical pictures of your neck and face (with your consent) to help with surgical planning.
  • Suggest specific facelift techniques.
  • Talk about the expected results of your facelift as well as any dangers or possible side effects.
  • Talk about the kind of anesthesia you plan to use prior to the procedure.

Facelift Procedure

Facelift is a surgical procedure that may be performed at an outpatient clinic or a hospital. Depending on the complexity of the procedure and the surgeon’s preferences, you get general anesthesia (which means you’ll be asleep) and local anesthesia (when your face is numbed).

Your surgeon may make incisions in these areas during surgery, depending on the type of facelift you receive:

  • at the top of your head, in your hairline.
  • in the area of your ears.
  • at the base of your scalp.
  • under your chin.
  • around your mouth.

Facelifts involve tightening the muscles in the face and relocating or removing fat or skin from the face. Your surgeon may do all of these procedures, or just some of them, depending on the type of facelift you are undergoing. Before the procedure, you and your surgeon will go over the entire process in detail.

Following the surgery, one of the following options will be used by your surgeon to close the incision(s), soluble sutures, stitches that, after a few days, must be taken out, adhesive skin.

How Long Does Facelift Process?

The facelift procedure usually takes around 3-6 hours to complete. However, if additional cosmetic treatments are performed at the same time, the process may take longer.

The results of facelifts are not long-lasting. As people age, their facial skin may start to sag once more. Overall, a facelift should last ten years.

What Are the Risks of Facelift?

A facelift is generally safe. But, like all medications and medical procedures, this procedure has some risks and possible side effects. They might consist of:

  • Bleeding.
  • Infection.
  • Having reaction to the anesthesia.
  • Wound healing issues.
  • Hematoma.
  • Scarring.
  • Nerve injury.
  • Hair loss.
  • Skin loss.

What Can You Expect After Facelift?

Following the procedure, a medical professional will drive you to a place of observation, so you can recover. After your condition stabilizes, you will be allowed to leave the hospital. A few hours are often needed for this.

If you have bruises and swelling on your face, you might have bandages covering it. Little drainage tubes might also be present.

A follow-up appointment and detailed instructions on how to take care of your incision site(s) and drains will be provided by your surgeon before you depart for your facelift surgery. If medicine is needed to control pain, your surgeon will write a prescription for it.
