By Annisa Amalia Ikhsania | October 01, 2024

Dental veneers can be a solution to improve the appearance of the front teeth. This step can also improve the structure and color of your teeth. Before doing so, make sure you know the preparations, risks, and treatments.

What are Dental Veneers?

Dental veneers are a procedure that involves placing a thin shell to cover the front surface of the teeth. Veneers will be permanently bonded to the teeth to improve their shape, size and color.

The materials commonly used in making dental veneers are porcelain or composite resin. Porcelain veneers are the most widely used because they are more durable. Its strength, durability and ability to mimic the natural reflective properties of teeth. This tool is printed in a laboratory.

Meanwhile, composite resin veneers can be installed in one visit to the dentist, without having to be molded in a laboratory. The doctor will make composite veneers after the patient has had an examination.

What’s The Purpose of Veneers?

The main purpose of dental veneers is to improve the appearance of front teeth that suffer from the following conditions:

  • Discoloration of teeth that cannot be treated with teeth whitening.
  • Broken or cracked teeth.
  • Diastema or gaps between the teeth.
  • The size of the teeth is not the same as one another.
  • Tooth growth abnormalities.

Even so, not everyone can use veneers. If you have a habit of grinding your teeth and experience other dental and oral problems, you are not recommended to use this coating.

What Happens Before Veneers?

Before deciding on veneers, you need to have several consultation sessions with a dentist. You can convey what the main purpose of installing veneers is.

The doctor will check whether you are suitable for using veneers or not. You can also ask what type of dental veneer is suitable for use according to your condition.

In preparation for installing porcelain dental veneers, the doctor will usually take dental X-rays and make dental impressions. During the tooth molding process, the doctor will place temporary veneers while waiting for the permanent veneers to be made.

However, if you use composite resin veneers, making a tooth impression is not necessary.

A small portion of enamel (usually less than a millimeter) is removed from the surface of the tooth to make room for the veneer. It is usually performed under local anesthesia to reduce discomfort.

Veneers Placement Procedure

Veneers are carried out by checking the suitability of the shape, size and color of the teeth to the veneers to be installed. Next, the doctor will remove the enamel from the surface of the tooth where the veneer will be installed.

If necessary, the doctor will grind back the tooth enamel so that the surface becomes rough. This way, the veneer can stick to the tooth surface longer. This process may be a little painful, so you will be given a local anesthetic.

Next, the veneer is attached to the tooth surface using a special adhesive so that it sticks perfectly.

If it is attached well, the dentist will make the necessary adjustments to ensure the veneer is attached properly.

The doctor will also check the patient's ability to bite after having veneers installed. If necessary, the doctor will make adjustments if necessary.

How Long Do Veneers Last?

Composite resin veneers usually last between 5-7 years. Although more affordable, they are not as strong as porcelain veneers.

Porcelain veneers are known for their durability and aesthetics that resemble natural teeth, so they can last between 10-15 years or more with proper care.

However, the veneer shell can be replaced earlier if you feel uncomfortable or the veneer layer is cracked and broken.

What Are the Risks of Veneers?

There are several risks of installing dental veneers that you need to know:

  • Cracked or broken tooth veneers.
  • Teeth become more sensitive because some of the enamel is eroded.
  • Discoloration or staining of dental veneers.

What Happens After Veneers?

Sensitivity usually lasts for several days to weeks. This depends on the individual and how much tooth enamel is removed during the procedure.

Initially, teeth that have been covered with veneers may feel a little different. Therefore, it may take you some time to get used to these changes.

Typically within a few days, most patients are accustomed to their new veneers. If it feels uncomfortable or inappropriate, try visiting a dentist immediately for further adjustments.

To make dental veneers last longer, there are several things you can do:

  • Avoid chewing hard textured foods. For example, ice cubes.
  • Avoid chewing foods with a sticky texture.
  • Avoid using your teeth to open packages or bottles.
  • Avoid the habit of biting pencils or nails.
  • Reduce consumption of foods and drinks that can cause stains to help keep the veneer color bright and natural.
  • Have your teeth checked by a doctor regularly.
