Preparing for Surgery: A Comprehensive Guide

By Febriyani Suryaningrum | October 01, 2024

Before undergoing a surgical procedure, it is essential to make thorough preparations. You need to ensure the reputation of the hospital and adhere to fasting guidelines as directed by your doctor. Here is a detailed explanation of the preparations you need to know before surgery.

Things to Confirm Before Deciding on Surgery

Whether it's a minor or major surgery, several factors need to be confirmed before proceeding:

  • Hospital Reputation and Doctor's Credibility. Ensure the hospital has a good reputation and the doctor is credible.
  • Is Surgery the Best Solution? Consult with multiple doctors to get various medical opinions.
  • Success Rate. Understand the likelihood of a successful outcome.
  • Potential Risks. Be aware of possible post-surgery risks and how to manage them.
  • Recovery Time. Know how long the recovery will take to plan for sick leave and other daily activities.
  • Cost. Prepare financially and check how much your insurance will cover.

General Surgery Preparations

If you decide to undergo surgery, your doctor will typically ask you to prepare in several ways depending on the type of procedure. Here are some common preparations:

1. Fasting

You will be instructed not to eat or drink anything for several hours before the surgery. This is crucial to prevent vomiting during surgery, which can lead to aspiration pneumonia.

Meanwhile eating and drinking before undergoing gastrointestinal surgery can lead to infections and complications.

If you accidentally eat or drink before the surgery, inform your doctor immediately. This way, the surgery can be postponed, preventing any life-threatening conditions.

2. Quit Smoking

If you smoke, your doctor will likely advise you to stop temporarily. This is because smoking before surgery can lead to:

  • Decreased blood flow, which slows down the healing process of surgical wounds.
  • A weakened immune system, increasing the risk of post-surgery infections.
  • A higher risk of heart attacks during or after the surgery.
  • An increased risk of blood clots.
  • A greater likelihood of developing pneumonia.

3. Stop Certain Medications

You should bring a list of all the medications you are currently taking, along with the dosages. Only bring the medications listed to the hospital if requested by your doctor.

The surgeon or anesthesiologist will then inform you about which medications should be taken and which should be discontinued before the surgery.

If you are advised to take medication on the day of the surgery, use as little water as possible. Be sure to inform the anesthesiologist or the attending nurse that you have taken the medication.

4. Cleanliness

You may be asked to bathe or shower before surgery to reduce the risk of bacterial transmission.

In certain situations, your doctor might request that you use a special soap. It is important to follow these instructions carefully.

Additionally, the doctor may ask you to shave the hair in the area where the procedure will be performed.

5. Medical Tests

You might need to undergo blood tests, X-rays, ECGs, and other tests to ensure you are ready for surgery.

6. Enema

Some patients will receive an enema the evening before their surgery. This procedure involves inserting a liquid, typically sterile saline, through the anus.

The purpose is to cleanse the colon of feces, thereby reducing the risk of infection during the surgery.

7. Remove Accessories

Before entering the operating room, make sure you have removed all accessories, such as earrings, necklaces, contact lenses, hairpins, hairpieces, and hearing aids.

This helps reduce the risk of unwanted bacterial transmission into the operating room.

If you wear dentures, braces, false eyelashes, or other prosthetic devices, discuss with your doctor what needs to be done.

8. Remove Makeup and Nail Polish

Before surgery, make sure to remove all makeup and nail polish to prevent harmful bacteria from entering the operating room.

This also helps avoid particles from these products entering open parts of the body, such as mascara falling into the eyes and causing injury.

Removing makeup and nail polish is also essential for doctors to clearly see your skin and nail color, allowing for accurate monitoring of your condition.

Additionally, avoid using perfume, hairspray, body lotion, and face cream on the day of surgery. Minimal use of deodorant is acceptable.

9. Bring Loose Clothing

Wearing loose, comfortable clothes and easy-to-wear footwear like slippers or sandals is recommended for post-surgery comfort.

10. Prepare Necessary Documents

Bring your ID, medical card, and insurance card. If possible, have a family member or close friend act as your guardian during the surgery. They can take care of your belongings and ensure you get home safely after surgery.
