10 Tips for Healthy and Safe Travel

By Febriyani Suryaningrum | August 28, 2024

Don’t let your vacation ruined by sudden illness, injury, or other setbacks, especially when traveling solo. Follow these healthy and safe travel tips for the best holiday experience.

1. Maintain Physical Fitness

Going on vacation doesn't mean you should give up healthy habits you've worked so hard to build. To stay fit and ready to explore, try to squeeze in 10-30 minutes of exercise each day.

For extra motivation, book hotels or resorts with gyms, yoga retreats, and other wellness activities.

2. Bring Personal Medications

Health issues can arise in new environments due to different weather, irregular eating schedules, unfamiliar foods, allergens, and more.

Therefore, it's crucial to bring your regular medications, especially if you have specific conditions like GERD or food allergies.

Keep your medications in an easily accessible container and include usage instructions and dosage information. Thus, other people can help you in an emergency situation.

3. Stay Hydrated

It's easy to forget to drink water while you're out enjoying your travel adventures. This can lead to dehydration.

Especially in hot places or during activities that make you sweat a lot, like going to the beach, swimming outside, canoeing, or rock climbing.

Dehydration can cause dizziness, extreme tiredness, dry mouth, sunken eyes, and even losing consciousness.

Hence, always carry enough water and drink more when it's hot or you're doing strenuous activities.

4. Always Have Breakfast

Many people tend to sleep in during vacations and skip breakfast to get a head start on their day or to catch up on their itinerary.

However, breakfast is essential as it provides the energy you need after a night of fasting. If you skip breakfast, you might feel tired and find it hard to concentrate.

It can take away from the enjoyment of your trip. So, don't miss out on that morning meal!

5. Pay Attention to Food Hygiene

When traveling, you will likely want to taste local dishes and street foods. However, make sure to choose clean places and watch how your food is prepared.

Avoid using wet plates, as they can harbor bacteria. Ensure the plates are dried using a clean towel or tissue paper.

Also, skip ice cubes from street vendors since they might be made from untreated water. Checking online reviews can help you find eateries with guaranteed cleanliness and quality.

6. Get Adequate Rest

When traveling, it can be tempting to pack your days with nonstop sightseeing, but don’t forget to rest!

Getting enough rest is essential to prevent fatigue. Therefore, aim for 7-9 hours of sleep each night.

This way, you’ll wake up feeling refreshed and ready to take on another day of adventures.

7. Get Vaccinated

If you’re visiting areas endemic to certain diseases, it’s advisable to get vaccinated beforehand. This protects you from potential infections and prevents you from bringing diseases back home.

8. Avoid Allergens

Allergens are substances that can trigger allergic reactions. If you have food allergies, ensure that your ordered meals do not contain allergens by informing the chef.

When buying packaged food, always check the labels for allergens.

If you are allergic to heat, avoid staying too long in hot destinations. For those allergic to latex, avoid wearing local accessories containing it such as bracelets, earrings, and necklaces.

9.  Always Wash Your Hands

Ensure that you always wash your hands with soap under running water before eating or touching your face.

This practice is essential to reduce the risk of infections and prevent acne breakouts. If water is not available, you can use hand sanitizer.

10. Know the Nearest Health Centers

In case of emergencies, it is advisable to know the nearest healthcare facilities like clinics or hospitals.

If you're vacationing in Bali, Bali International Hospital (BIH) is a prime destination for emergencies.

Located in Indonesia’s first Special Economic Zone (SEZ) for Health, The Sanur, it is easily accessible from all parts of the island.

With a holistic wellness approach, Bali International Hospital is equipped with professional healthcare staff, cutting-edge medical technology, and world-class services.

It also integrates with various five-star facilities like Bali Beach Hotel, The Meru Resort, Ethnomedical Garden, and Arunika Restaurant.

Providing a safe, comfortable, and health-supportive travel experience.
