Sick in Bali

What to Do If You Get Sick in Bali?

By Annisa Amalia Ikhsania | October 01, 2024

Bali, as one of the world's most famous tourist destinations, offers visitors a variety of unforgettable experiences. However, just like anywhere else, there is a chance that someone can get sick in Bali.

Getting sick while away from home can certainly be a stressful experience. However, don't worry because there are several steps you can take.

What to Do If You Get Sick in Bali?

Suddenly sick in Bali can be unexpected; it is important to stay calm and take the right steps to get the necessary medical care. Here is a guide:

1. Stay Calm and Identify Symptoms

The first step when you feel unwell is to stay calm and try to identify the symptoms you are experiencing.

Are you feeling feverish, dizzy, nauseous, or experiencing other symptoms? Identifying these symptoms can help you determine your next steps.

2. Stay Hydrated

Some mild symptoms such as headaches or fatigue may be relieved by adequate hydration. So, make sure you drink plenty of water to prevent dehydration.

If you experience more serious symptoms such as high fever, prolonged vomiting, diarrhea, or severe body aches, this is a sign that you need immediate medical attention.

3. Get Rest

In addition to drinking water, you also need to get enough rest so that your body condition does not drop even further.

You are advised to sleep around 7-9 hours at night so that the next day you wake up with a body that feels fitter and ready to continue your activities.

4. Buy Over-the-Counter Medications from Pharmacies

In Bali, you can get medication at the nearest pharmacy. For example, when you have a fever, you can take paracetamol or aspirin, or take anti-nausea medication when your health condition is constantly nauseous.

If you have a certain medical history or are taking medication regularly, make sure to bring enough medication for the entire duration of your trip. However, if you run out of medication or forget to bring it, try to fill a replacement prescription at the nearest pharmacy.

5. Call Insurance Provider

If you are getting sick, an important step to take is to contact your health insurance provider. They can provide information about the hospitals or clinics they work with in Bali, as well as the procedures for making a claim.

Having health insurance is essential, especially when you are far from home. This will ensure that you get the treatment you need without having to worry about expensive costs.

International health insurance is highly recommended for any traveler, as not all local insurances cover treatment abroad.

6. Visit a Clinic or Hospital Immediately

Bali has a good healthcare system with a variety of medical facilities available. However, it is important to understand that hospitals in more remote areas may not have the complete medical facilities and equipment compared to hospitals in big cities such as Denpasar or Kuta.

If over-the-counter medication does not improve your condition quickly, or your medical condition is serious, you may need to be referred to a hospital with more complete facilities.

Most of the major hospitals in Bali also work with international health insurance providers, which makes the treatment and payment process easier. Some of them even have medical staff who can speak English.

One of the hospitals that can be visited is Bali International Hospital. The hospital is located in the Special Economic Zone (KEK) for Health, The Sanur.

Bali International Hospital offers state-of-the-art medical technology, world-class facilities and services, and a comfortable treatment experience.

In addition, Bali International Hospital is also integrated with various five-star facilities such as Bali Beach Hotel, The Meru Resort, and Ethnomedical Garden.

When visiting the hospital, make sure you bring your identification documents, insurance information, and if possible, your medical records or health history. This will help the doctor provide a more accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment.

7. Return Home or Continue Travel

If after receiving treatment you feel well enough, you can continue your trip or activities in Bali. However, if your condition does not improve, consider returning home earlier or arranging for follow-up care in your home city or country.

Health is a top priority, and there is no harm in changing your travel plans in order to get better treatment or recover faster.

Getting sick while in Bali may be unexpected, but with the right preparation and knowledge of the local health system, you can face the situation with peace of mind.

Always make sure to have health insurance, visit a trusted medical facility, and follow medical advice properly. Prevention is also an important key to staying healthy during your vacation so you don't get sick in Bali. By taking the right steps, you can enjoy your vacation in Bali safely and comfortably, without worrying about health problems.

If you are planning a trip to Bali, make sure to prepare yourself well and know what to do. That way, you can enjoy the beauty and uniqueness of Bali with more peace of mind.
